In Togo, the prison system is synonymous with promiscuity, malnutrition, disease, stigma and reoffending. The Swiss association Chryzalid with its local partner, the “Fraternité des Prisons du Togo”, is setting up a global programme in 5 prisons in the country, with the following main activities: vocational training (workshops within the prisons), sales of workshop products, distribution of food kits, support for detainees upon their release from prison, family mediation, support for detainees’ wives (training in income-generating activities and interest- free loans). Each year, more than 350 people benefit from this project and the results are telling: a reoffending rate divided by 10.
